How to use Color Splash Effect

  1. 1

    Upload your photo

Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP. Works best on photos with a clear, colorful subject — portraits, flowers, products.

  2. 2

    AI detects the subject

The neural network identifies and isolates your subject in the browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

  3. 3

    Adjust the intensity

Drag the desaturation slider to control how gray the background becomes. 100% is full black and white, 0% leaves it in color.

  4. 4

    Download

Download as JPG. The subject stays full color, the background is the level of grayscale you chose.

What is the color splash effect?

Color splash — also called selective color or color pop — is a photography editing technique where a specific subject is kept in full color while everything else in the frame is converted to grayscale. The result draws the viewer's eye directly to the subject. It is popular in portrait photography, product photography, and social media content.

How it works

This tool uses the same AI segmentation model as the background remover. The model produces an alpha mask that separates the subject from the background at the pixel level. Instead of removing the background, the tool uses the mask to apply grayscale conversion only to background pixels, leaving subject pixels untouched. The desaturation intensity slider lets you control how strongly the grayscale is applied — from a subtle fade to full black and white.
