When BMP format is required

BMP is an uncompressed raster format native to Windows. Most modern software has moved beyond it, but BMP is still required in specific contexts: some industrial control systems and embedded device firmware accept only BMP for display assets, certain legacy Windows applications have BMP-only import dialogs, and some thermal printer drivers require BMP input for label and receipt printing.

BMP files are always larger than their JPG or PNG equivalents because no compression is applied. A 1920x1080 image that is 500 KB as a JPG may be 6 MB as a BMP. This is not a defect - it reflects the format's design. When compatibility is the priority and file size is not a constraint, BMP delivers exactly what those systems expect without any compression-related concerns. For general-purpose use where compatibility is not the constraint, PNG provides lossless compression with broad support and much smaller file sizes.

Color depth

This tool exports BMP at 24-bit color depth, providing full RGB color with no palette limitation. This is the most widely compatible BMP variant and is accepted by virtually all software that opens BMP files, including all versions of Windows Paint, Photoshop, GIMP, and industrial imaging software.
