Front-facing phone cameras capture a mirrored image. Most camera apps reverse this automatically when saving, but some modes save the raw mirrored version. When text in a photo appears backwards, or a person's face looks subtly unfamiliar in a way their mirror reflection normally does not, a horizontal flip corrects the issue in one click without any other change to the image.
Architectural and product photography sometimes requires a mirrored version of an image for layout symmetry - placing two matching shots on either side of a central design element, for example. Flipping creates the second image without reshooting, and the result is indistinguishable from a genuine mirror-image composition. After flipping, you may want to rotate the image if it also needs an orientation correction.
Vertical flip - top to bottom - applies in specific cases: creating a water reflection effect beneath a landscape photo, correcting a document that was placed upside-down on a scanner, or preparing images for printing processes that require inverted orientation. Combined with a horizontal flip, the result is equivalent to a 180° rotation - a useful shortcut if that is the outcome you need. For fine angle corrections like straightening a tilted horizon, use the custom angle rotation instead.
