Pixelation is one of the most widely recognised methods for obscuring sensitive content in images. Faces, licence plates, screen content, personal details on documents, and identifying background details can all be censored with a pixelation block large enough to eliminate legible features. A block size of 16 pixels or larger is typically sufficient to prevent recognition of facial features in a standard portrait. For small text like licence plates or addresses, larger blocks of 20 to 32 pixels are more appropriate. For a smoother, less geometric form of censoring, Gaussian blur achieves a similar result with softer edges.
Unlike blurring, pixelation is absolute - within each block, all colour information is averaged to a single flat value. This makes it harder to partially reverse, and it communicates clearly to the viewer that the content has been intentionally obscured rather than being an artefact of image quality.
Pixelation also has a long history as a deliberate creative technique. Pixel art, retro game aesthetics, and stylised portraits all use large pixel grids as an intentional visual statement. Applying pixelation to a photograph produces an image that reads as a representation rather than a direct capture. Start with a block size of 8 to 12 pixels for a retro video game feel, or push to 32 or 64 pixels for an abstract mosaic where the original subject becomes only loosely identifiable. You can add a coloured frame around the pixelated result to complete the retro aesthetic.
